A red xmas in the palm forest » Northern Rata and Nikau forest

rata and nikau

Stunning primeval forest, Paparoa National Park

This view of mixed forest and creek emerging from the mist was so arresting and as the mist ebbed and flowed the scene changed constantly. The Northern rātā (Metrosideros robusta) was bursting with crimson flowers and gave the scence such a stunning focus, but the nikau palms (Rhopalostylis sapida) and tree ferns (Dicksonia squarrosa) really define the feel. The Nikau palms are the southern most palms in the world.
